Colin Roberts

colin Colin Roberts is a resources lawyer, international commercial and investment arbitrator, accredited international commercial mediator, adjudicator and expert determiner, with over 35 years of multi-disciplinary resource industry experience.

He is a Senior Research Fellow, lecturer of International Arbitration, and is directing the LLM programme in International Dispute Management at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP), University of Dundee.

He was formerly the Deputy Director and Commercial Director of the CEPMLP, University of Dundee; Director of the MBA Programme in Resource Management and leader of the CEPMLP Africa Programme.

Originally a graduate of the Western Australian School of Mines, Colin is a Chartered Mining Engineer, A Chartered Petroleum Engineer, a Chartered Scientist and has additional qualifications in Resources Law & Policy (Dundee) and International Commercial Arbitration (London).

He has spent most of his working life in the Developing World, both in his capacity of
managing resource projects and in his Resource Law capacity.

Colin is currently the Director of Austmine Ltd and Managing Director of CIDR (Centre for International Dispute Resolution).

 

Fayyaz Qureshi

fayFayyaz Qureshi LL.M (Petroleum Law & Policy), LL.B (Shari’ah & Law), B.A, P.G.Dip.ICA, is associated with a leading international firm of advocates and legal consultants based in Pakistan and having associates in the Middle East. He has dealt with cases of a high profile and value and is admitted to the Pakistan High Court Bar.

Mr. Qureshi is multilingual and has had a multi disciplinary education and training. He completed his masters in Petroleum Law and Policy under scholarship from the Centre for Energy, Petroleum & Mineral Law & Policy (CEPMLP) University of Dundee, UK. His first law degree was obtained from the prestigious International Islamic University, Islamabad, for which he gained the gold medal for outstanding academic achievement.

Having a broad based commercial law background that encompasses both Islamic and secular law, he has represented and advised multi national companies and has assisted in the drafting of commercial agreements that complied with the requirements of the Islamic Shari’a law - for instance, in the case of motor vehicle leasing and finance. He has also drafted and vetted a wide range of commercial contracts for oil, gas and construction projects enforcing government regulations, corporate compliance standards and contractual obligations.

As a Member of the Expert Legal Committee of Pakistan Petroleum Exploration and Production Companies Association (PPEPCA) in July 2000 to May 2001, Mr. Qureshi reviewed and re- drafted the Petroleum Exploration and Production rules (on-shore and off-shore), Model Petroleum Concession Agreement, Joint Venture Agreement and the ordinance for establishing the Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority. Furthermore he has advised on various issues pertaining to the petroleum sector of Pakistan.

Mr. Qureshi is experienced in international commercial arbitration where he has been involved with various arbitration issues relating to commercial disputes, in particular, construction disputes involving substantial amounts in respect of motorway and highway projects in Pakistan.

The rapid growth of the Islamic Banking and Finance sector and its involvement in
international trade are of particular interest to Mr. Qureshi. The impacts of Islamisation promise to add a new dimension to the concept to investment and dispute resolution in the Islamic world.

He has keenly followed developments in international commercial arbitration and the rich traditions of arbitration found in Islamic jurisprudential thought. He believes the two can work in harmony to promote international commerce.

 

Peter Cockcroft

peteMr Cockcroft has an extensive and proven track record in the management of international energy businesses and has spent the past ten years principally in commercial, management and advisory roles. He has over forty oil and gas technical and commercial publications to his credit and is presently the Visiting Research Fellow for the Institute of South East Asia studies.

Mr Peter Cockcroft embarked on a distinguished career in the petroleum industry after graduating from the University of Sydney with qualifications in geology and geophysics in 1972. He holds postgraduate qualifications in business administration from the Edinburgh Business School and the University of Texas.

As a recognised authority in South East Asia, Mr Cockcroft has been a special adviser to governments and major petroleum companies. He holds memberships with the Institute of Directors (UK), American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Society of Petroleum Engineers and the International association of Energy Economists.
